Architecture as Sculptural Packaging

I would like to highlight two recent and interesting projects from the Studio of Massimo Mariani. The first project is Benozzo Gozzoli Museum in Castelfiorentino, Italy. The museum is designed to enclose the historic frescoes of the early renaissance artist Benozzo Gozzoli (1421-1497).

The second project is Cable Industry Headquarters in Empoli, Italy.

Although the two projects appear distinct and different they are actually very similar. Both projects treat the envelope of the building with outmost attention. There is an amazing precise surface texture, the carefully drawn window perforation and proportions, the deliberate lighting around the architectural elements, the overall sculptural shape. At the same time there is a disdain for the actual building interiors, stark and bare materials on the inside announce architecture obsessed with the sculptural packaging.
