Caspar David Friedrich, The Abbey in the Oakwood, 1809-10, Schloss Charlottenburg, Berlin

I have been thinking lately that  it’s impossible to interpret the 20th century without the German Romanticism of the 19th century. In art I particularly like Caspar David Friedrich, especially his dark and morbid ruins.
