A rare book review by Harold Bloom. He writes about The Trials of Diasporta - A History of Anti-Semitism in England by Anthony Julius in the NY Times.

“..to point out that the United States, despite bigots left and right, does not encourage the genteel anti-Semitism that is woven into the English academic and literary world. ”
The absence of normal genteel anti-semitism in the States is a function of not having a class-obsessed society. The old cliche is that a Brit will always ask another where he or she went to school within the first 10 mins of conversation. Americans are just more concerned with the present and more accepting of difference. There is always noticeably less biting humour among Americans – Brits sometimes have a small streak of sadism in the office joke.
Antisemitism is overrated.
