Tsar Nicholas (2nd from right) after a game of tennis with his daughters
On the subject of The Etymology of the Word Tsar, Princess Zoe, Zachariah the Jew and the Worst Political Move in Papal History. Yale’s Beinecke Library published a remarkable collection of Tsar Nicholas family albums. There are six albums rescued by Tsarina’s friend and confidante Anna Vyrubova. The photos are taken between 1907-1915: Tsar Nicholas II and his family.
P.S. The library is playing games with the photos, they have taken down from Flickr some of the more interesting (and better quality?) casual photos, like the one above, but you can still find them in the main collection. Many of the photos have a good resolution on the royal outfits. Take a look at those snickers-like (canvas?) shoes with beautiful wide, white laces. There are multiple photos of the Tsar with his son Tsarevich Alexei in different costumes.
