OK, everyone seems to know this, except me:

This makes a perfect sense. There had to be a severe reason for Abraham to expels his own son Ishmael. If he was messing up his small brother Issac, this would be just such a reason. If Kugel-wise this is the same authorship, then the linguistic tick is a giveaway.

James Kugel is “daas teiroh”. He actually respects the text and what the creative writers had in mind (daas), instead of respecting the “image”of the text.
