Dovid Katz and the Maps of Litvish

The Vilno based Dovid Katz published a series of fascinating maps (click to enlarge) – “The Atlas”.

And here below is the amazing map of Litvish, the thingy known in America as the dreidel, there were sixteen! different names for it just in the yiddish Lithuania. Here is the map on how they pronounced it in different towns. We are living the era of the universal, once size fits all, cultural poverty, nothing illustrates it better that this map. Note that there were no dreidl in Belarus, it was overwhelmingly a gor. And there were plenty of verfls up North, right around my Druya.

Gor is the way my parents called the dreydel. Pauline Wengeroff in her memoirs also calls it a Gor.In Lita and the Ukraine many things were called by different names . The cemetary was called the feld, going to mikveh was gegengen in vasser and many more.
