Security Firms Pitched BofA, Commerce Dep., etc. to Destroy Careers of Journalists Supporting Wikileaks

The Anonymous is the hacker group associate with Wikileaks. The security firm HBGary teamed up with Palantir Technologies and Berico Technologies. Aaron Barr of  HBGary promised to identify the individuals behind the Anonymous. The Anonymous declared a cyberwar on HBGary and succeeded in hacking their servers. The Anonymous uploaded the entire email archive of HBGary on public servers. Glenn Greenwald of Salon is the most vocal supporter of Wikileaks. In the published email archive, the HBGary (and other firms) pitched BofA, Commerce Dep., etc. to go after the journalists like Glenn Greenwald, to destroy their careers.

As I understand it, ‘anonymous’ is just a collection of individuals who decided to retaliate against those companies — via hacking their websites — that acceded to U.S. government demands to stop processing donations to wikileaks, after wikileaks disseminated the diplomatic cables. The case of Bank of America is a bit different, in that Assange claimed that he had strong incriminating evidence against them for misdeeds that could quite possibly lead to their demise. Unfortunately, he hasn’t released that information, and if we are to believe the wikileaks defectors, the evidence that Assange has is very tepid.

All of this is tremendously unfortunate, as the real leaks that need to be divulged are precisely those emanating from major corporations, financial companies figuring quite prominently amongst them. The diplomatic cables are, in that sense, a distraction.

I am not sure why people think this post is about WikiLeaks. May be they just read the headlines?
