Melech Perman and Zusher Dvortz (Taganter). Photo by Paul Schutzer - The Samovar Symphony of 1960
I continue to curate Paul Schutzer’s photos, I feel certain kinship with him. It’s now more difficult to fish the photos thematically from the archive, the only way to see “the full picture”. In 1960 Paul Schutzer photographed the series of “Jewish Types In Israel”. In the series are the amazing shots of the Yemenis, Lag B’Omer in Meron, Martin Buber, there are also photos of his then girlfriend (before he fell in love with Yael Dayan in 1966-67, right before he was killed.)
But then there is this photo shoot. I assume this is Kfar Chabad. Do you know the people? Paul Schutzer’s work has a certain poetic quality and part of the depth of his photography is that he had a connection with his subjects.
UPDATE: It took exactly twenty minutes from publishing of the post till I got an email with the identities of the people. What is even more amazing is that the email came from Doba’s grandson: The older man is Melech Perman, the other man is Zusher Dvortz (Taganter). The woman is Doba Kaminezki (nee Drizin), now in Brooklyn. The child is Mendel Kaminetzky, now in Melbourne.

Thank you for sharing the photos. It was indeed Kfar Chabad.
Nach dos benk ich ! Its a million years before all of frumkeit became middle class and anshtell !
A “low class” is a better description. The quasi Marxist term middle-class presumes a financial status, while we are talking the complete poverty of spirit and imagination, plus the group think in it’s most hideous form.
Di frummer today aspire to be subhuman first and “middle-class” a distant second.
Never mind the Tznius Patrol. Those sleeves would be a scandal today, but somehow she managed to raise a דור ישרים…
Look at those smiling kids in 1960. None of them had an i-pod, X-box, Playstation – not even an old Pentium 4 or something. No Nikes, no DKNY. No Rollerblades, no cable. And they are still smiling…
These are truly beautiful pictures.
